Hi GuitarBob, I've been using Spybot for ages! Thanks for the mention of Malwarebytes, I've tried it and I think its a very good recommendation.

Malwarebytes is very good against common viruses and spyware, including fake antiviruses. Malwarebytes does not have a lot of signatures, but it has a very good heuristic scan. It excels as finding viruses after they infect your computer. It does not do too well against rootkits, but for that, you can use the free TDSSKiller antirootkit from Kaspersky. The free version of Malwarebytes is just about as good as the paid version, which includes a relal-time scanner (instead of the on-demand scanner on the free version).

I haven't used pc's in a long time and the last time I used avast was almost 10 years. But now I'm back using pc's and I think I'm going to try this out again.
Or might try out malwarebytes. Thanks for the suggestion.

In my opinion Avast eats too much RAM and makes the computer slower.

The free version of Avast will provide good, basic protection for your laptop. You can help it by not downloading email attachments from unknown sources and by avoiding web sites that offer porn and cracked software. If you want some extra protection, ClamWin can provide it. ClamWin also does not scan in real-time like Avast and so does not consume excess computer resources until it does an on-demand/scheduled scan. Just exclude ClamWin's program directory and data directory from Avast's scans.
