Quarantined .exe files

I have ClamWin on my computer at home, and have never had a problem with it. But I'm housesitting for my Mom, and her computer has no virus program, so I loaded Clam. I set it to move viruses to quarantine, ran it, and it found 174 viruses. I was really happy and felt that I had cleaned things up for her. Until I noticed that a lot of things won't work now. I checked the quarantine folder, and it moved stuff into it that I KNOW aren't viruses...including parts of ClamWin itself, clamtray.exe and clamwin.exe...and a bunch of other .exe things and some dll files.

Is there any "undo" thing that will fix this? I feel awful that I've damaged my Mom's computer, and I don't know how to make it right, or why Clam would behave like this in the first place.

Please help me!

(Edited to add: She has Windows98.)

hmm, that is odd.

You can inspect the report file - it will have the original location of the quarantined file and then manually restore them back.

Thanks for your reply. Smile

Yes, I've tried to do that...I read it on another thread here. I tried it with a dll file, but when I try the program that said it's lacking it, it still doesn't work. It says the dll file is in the wrong format.

Guess I'll just go back to paving the road to Hell with good intentions, lol.

Did you use the latest stable version of ClamWin? See if the computer has GoBack or some similar system restoration software. Then, if you've tried everything, as a last resort, reinstall Win 98 and then delete ClamWin and the items in the quarrantine folder. Don't run ClamWin again, as it obviously doesn't work correctly on that computer, which, as Alch says, is certainly odd. I'm running Win 98 myself and have never had any problems with ClamWin--not even any false positives.

Use the free version of AVG. I used it for several months without any problems.
