ClamWin uses the scanning engine and virus database signatures provided by the Clam AV project, now owned by Cisco/Sourcefire. It primarily depends upon the virus signatures, so if Clam AV's signatures include one for a specific piece of adware, then ClamWin will detect it. One problem with adware is that a lot of it is not detected by the antiiruses because the adware owners have bought a valid digital signature from one of the signature authorities, and most AVs ignore files that have a valid digital signature. If a piece of adware is too "bad," however, the AVs will detect it.
If ClamWin doesn't detect a piece of adware, upload it to the Virus Total online scanning service. Clam AV relies heavily upon Virus Total submissions. You can also submit undetected virus and false detections (false positives) directly to Clam AV via their contact web page, but I think Virus Total submissions is your best option.
Look into the Clam Sentinel project, also open source, which adds a real-time scanner to ClamWin. It is a bit heavy on the false positives, but you can exclude (whitelist) them.
Thanks for using ClamWin. We will certainly try to improve it in the future with user support.
Regards,
