I've been trying to download Clamwin for the past couple of days and keep getting the, "expects newer version of windows" message. I did see a thread on this issue but can't seem to find it again. Please help. I'm running Win98SE, and as far as I can tell the computer is in good shape. 266Mhz, 640mb ram, and plenty of hard drive space available. Suggestions please! Thanks. Ed.

ClamWin should work on Win 98-0-there are people who use it--including the developer of Clam Sentinel, Andrea Russo of Italy.

You might try increasing the size of your swap file. It's been a long time since I used Win 98, but do some Googling for "increasing swap file on Windows 98" if you don't know how to increase it. If that doesn't work, I suggest adding RAM to get up to 1 megabyte in size--probably the minimum size now. Andrea Russo can be reached via the Clam Sentinel web site at https://sourceforge.net/projects/clamsentinel/ on the web.

Thanks Bob, I just tried to download an earlier version and it worked perfectly, and updated itself. I'm thrilled! Yeah, my ram is low because I've heard lots of chatter about Win98SE not liking (gets flakey) more than 512mb of ram, but it can use 768 flawlessly by editing the system.ini Vcache MaxFileCache to 512. My mother board can take up to 3GB. Initally it came with 128mb, and just this am I added 512 to it and altered the system.ini file. Computer seems to work fine, and is pretty fast too. The mad scientist in me will probably experiment with more ram in the future. How can I not with the price of ram these days. Thanks again. I'm psyched to have Clamwin and hope it keeps going. Will probably donate some $ if it serves me well for a while.

I forgot that an older version might be best for you. Andrea Russo is a die-hard Win 98 user, so he is a good reasource for Win 98, and he is very helpful. Look into his Clam Sentinel program, which enables you to scan with ClamWin in a real-time mode (file additions, modifications, and copies), and it also has its own heuristic scanner that detects many viruses for which ClamWin does not have a signature. It is written especially for Win 98 computers (small footprint, virtual driver) but can be used on any Win OS.

Thanks for using ClamWin!

You read my mind. Clam Sentinel is next on the hit parade. Will probably install today if things go well. Thanks again.
