Avast is a better antivirus than ClamWin. It is a real-tlime scanner backed by a commercial company with lots of employees and an ongoing development effort. ClamWin is an on-demand scanner develped by two people in their spare time with a scan engine and virus signatures given to them by the Clam AV project, which is now commercial but doesn't have a strong development effort. A real-time scanner scans as files are used on your computer. An on-demand scanner scans only when you tell it to or when you have scheduled a scan. You should have a real-time scanner on the world wide web. ClamWin makes a good backup scanner, but you don't really need backup if you have Avast or another good AV (say one of those used on the Jotti or Virus Total online scanning services).
Avast recently outsourced their customer service to an Indian IT firm, which has been "overselling" to many users contacting them--trying to sell them services they don't need and concentrating upon selling instead of doing a good job. Avast has put the relationship on hold. ClamWin has nothing to sell. I have been a ClamWin user since 2006, but I use it with other security software-Malwarebytes free and Kaspersky's TDSSKiller antirootkit program and the Clam Sentinel "front-end" program that provides basic real-time protection using ClamWin and has its own heuristic scan engine as well. These are all free security programs. Basically, I guess you would use ClamWin if you do not want to pay for security software, you are fairly careful about your web surfing (no porn, cracked software, torrent downloads, light on social networking), and you are capable of taking some personal responsibility for your own computer security. I hope this information helps in your decision. Stay Safe! Regards, |

I agree that Clamwin cannot be compared to Avast, which is way better and detects all the viruses in real time. Also Avast has a stronger background with lots of employees working for the firm in order to produce the best antivirus software

Did you hear about the problem Avast recently had with the Indian company that does its customer support? They were overselling unneeded services and program capabilities. Avast is "re-evaluating" their relationsip but has not severed any ties as far as I know, and that was a couple of months ago. The product may be good, but perhaps Avast has succumbed to commercial pressures.
ClamWin will not oversell! Regards, |
