ClamWin is an on-demand scanner, which means it only scans when you tell it to or when you have scheduled a scan. It does not consume too many computer resources when it is not scanning--just enough to monitor its system tray and schedule updates. It is not a real-time scanner like the commercial AV programs, which scan constantly as files are opened and closed on your computer. ClamWin is an open source program, which means the source code is freely available to those who want it. Source code for the commercial AVs is not available to users. ClamWin is developed by computer enthusiasts in their spare time, while the commercial AVs are written by paid, full-time developers. The ClamWin developers are very responsive to problems that are reported by users and to their suggestions for improvement. The average commercial AV user will never be able to contact their developers.
Because it does not scan in real-time, Clamwin is best used as a "backup" or "second opinion" AV to a real-time scanner. Another program, The free open source Clam Sentinel program, adds a real-time front-end to ClamWin which lets it scan in real-time as files are added, modified, or copied on your computer. Clam Sentinel also has its own heuristic scanning engine, which detects and quarantines viruses for which there are no ClamWin signatures. Clam Sentinel is available at https://sourceforge.net/projects/clamsentinel/ on the web. ClamWin should be installed and configured before Clam Sentinel is installed. Clam Sentinel comes with a good set of defaults, but new Clam Sentinel users should read the Simple Guide that comes with the installed package before using it.
I hope this is enough information for you.
Regards,
