ClamWin is not a resident/real-time scanner, as explained on the ClamWin home page. It is an on-demand scanner that scans only when you want it to scan--either manually or via a scheduled scan. A resident or real-time scanner scans files as they are accessed/placed on your computer. If you surf the web a lot, you should rely upon a real-time scanner with ClamWin as a backup.
If ClamWin is your only scanner, you could get an infection and not know about it until you do a scan with ClamWin. In addition, ClamWin must have a signature for each virus in its signature database, so if it does not have a signature for a particular virus, it will not be able to spot it, even during a scan.
There are several free real-time scanners that are very good. If you need one, look into Microsoft's Security Essentials, Alwil's Avast, and Avira's AntiVir. Another option is to use the ClamSentinel program, which adds a real-time scanning capability to ClamWin and, in addition, it provides heuristic detection/quarantine for unknown viruses and warns you when there is a suspicious file placed on your computer. The ClamSentinel site is at https://sourceforge.net/projects/clamsentinel/ on the web. ClamWin should be installed before you install Clam Sentinel.
Keep in mind that no antivirus is a substitute for common sense and safe surfing practices.
