Okay, you did not say anything about a virus. ClamWin does a better job at detecting viruses than it does at removing them if they have already infected your system. ClamWin is also not a real-time scanner. It only scans when you do a manual scan or when you have scheduled a scan. It is an on-demand scanner, and it works best as a backup scanner to a real-time scanner.
Download the Malwarebytes free antimalware program at https://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free on the web and do a quick scan with it. Have it quarantine any viruses it finds. Then get into Windows Safe Mode (hit F8 upon bootup until you see the choice screen--choose normal safe mode) and do another quick scan with it. The free version of malwarebytes is an on-demand scanner, but it does a good job of cleaning up viruses. Download Microsoft Security Essentials at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security_essentials/default.aspx on the web. It is free for Genuine Windows computers. Have it scan your computer in regular mode. Keep it, and configure it to scan in real-time, and set up a regular daily scan with it. Download Kaspersky's free TDSS Killer antirootkit scanner. It can clean up the most common rootkits that might be hidden on your computer and hard to find. You can download it at https://support.kaspersky.com/faq/?qid=208283363 on the web. Keep it and run it once a week. It is updated often. If nothing has helped you so far, get a free rescue CD from one of the antivirus companies. You will have to download it as an iso file and then burn it to CD. I like the ones from Kaspersky, F-Secure, and Dr. Web. The rescue disks run under a Linux OS included on the CD, so Windows viruses can't hide--if the rescue AV has signatures for them. You should have a wired internet connection (not wireless) so it can update it when you run it. There is a list of AV rescue CDs at https://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2363533,00.asp on the web. Well, I wish ClamWin was best, but it has limitations: it is not real-time, it is only developed/maintained by two people on a part-time basis. It also uses the Clam scanning engine which is designed for Linux email servers--not Windows personal PCs. Clam only has one person who prepares virus signatures on a full-time basis. ClamWin can't be as good as a commercial AV, but it can get better.
You could try getting into Windows Safe Mode and then scan with ClamWin. Some viruses have do not work well in Safe Mode. I don't expect this to help much though. I think you should follow the cleaning suggestions from my previous post. The AV rescue CD will most likely clean anything. What matters is that you clean your computer--not what you clean it with. The Clam Sentinel project (a separate project from ClamWin) at https://sourceforge.net/projects/clamsentinel/ on the web provides a front-end to ClamWin that lets you use ClamWin as a real-time scanner. It also has its own scanning engine that detects many viruses for which ClamWin does not have a signature. Regards, |
