Hi

Clamwin crashes each time I run a scan. The last part of the Scan report is below. I have the clamscan.exe.dmp file, but don't know where to send it.

I am using Windows XP Pro.

Can anyone help.

A list of c: contents is below. Would it help if I watched a scan to try to work out which file/directory it is trying to scan before it crashes?

Clamwin Crashes on Windows 98SE

I first installed ClamWin and while it is painfully slow (12+ hours) on a 4GB partitioned hard drive (C:, DSmile, it did work many times.

Now all of a sudden it always freezes my computer. I've tried scanning only one of the partitions at a time, and it always crashes on either one, and I've tried to catch it doing it, and suceeded a couple of times but once it freezes I have to reboot. Doesn't seem to be a pattern to it, like the same file isn't the same each time I've been able to see where it was stopped. Usually I wake up in the morning and the monitor is in power save and won't light back up. I update constantly and even uninstalled the newest ClamWin and tried using the .096 version I first installed. I did a complete clean install. Problem didn't go away. One time I left the monitor on "All the time" and caught ClamWin had froze my computer. I was still able to move the mouse this time and just clicked on the far left column and it started shining its lights and proceeding through more files. I left it alone, and woke to find it had still got frozen up again.

The only thing it ever uncovered from those original successful scans that it showed was a spoofed email (Phishing) that it wouldn't remove. I traced the email which it said was in my Thunderbird Junk folder. Folder was empty.

This was back when ClamWin actually completed a scan of both partitions. I can find no other antivirus software that still runs on 98SE. I have 64mb RAM and it is a Pentium 200 MMX Gateway computer.

I need a new computer and get rid of this one, but I don't want to lose my data, but I don't want to transfer it onto a new computer and find that it has some fault that transfers with it.

I have tried looking for new files immediately after the first crash and couldn't find anything that looked suspicious. I'm nearing the point of reformatting my C drive which will take at least 2 days just to clean out the operating system and reinstall my programs. But if the problem is in my Thunderbird email, I'd lose all of it unless I use Karen's Power tools to transfer the email from the C to my D partition. But then I'd just be putting the problem right back on the system.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks,
lilbug

the directory listing looks ok, very strange,
win98 problems are different for sure, crash or freeze?

Hello, something strange seems to have happened with this post. I am not using windows 98 (Windows XP).

Since posting the item I have narrowed the problem down further - I think it is to do with long file/directory names. Clamwin seems to crash whilst scanning the files with a particularly long file path.

If the question "crash or freeze?" was meant for me - I think I would describe it as a crash - Clamwin is able to tell me that the crash happened.

Thanks for your help.

I'm new to this forum. I was trying not to start a new thread and this one seemed somehow appropriate. It freezes. Whether I leave the monitor on or have it on power save, I cannot move the cursor, ClamWin never finished the scan. Nothing works. No recourse but to hit the reset button (which older computers like this Gateway have).

If it is appropriate, I can start this as a new thread. I was just trying not to duplicate something in the forums according to the agreement I signed to register. Hoping somebody can help figure out this problem and help.

Thanks,
lilbug
