Figured I'd report in and say the result was a reinstall of XP. I'm getting mostly back ot normal at this point, but this is the first time I've ever had such a thing happen with any AV programs. I'm sure Clam's a good proggie, no question. Maybe I'll try it again someday(the one who sent the computer installed it), but for now, yeah.
