How come Clamwin is so slow for me? I updated all virus databases on version 0.95.2. of ClamWinPortable.

I scan a USB stick choosing the letter and clicking on the 1st icon from right.
Scan result :

8 minutes for 26MB and 132 files. Is this normal? My files are just usual files (exe, pdf, ini).

I am on Windows 2000, latest patches.

you can configure clamwin preferences-filters to only scan for file extensions that are most likely to have viruses. i use about 40 and it takes about 30 minutes or so to scan my 160 mb harddrive--about the same as avira's antivir. google for "dangerious file extensions" and be sure to include dll, doc. xls, ppt, rtf, pdf, swf, and zip. many lists don't include them.

I recently ran chkdsk on all my drives.
I defragment my drives on a daily basis.
I do not use cleaners.

Clamwin is still extremely slow for me. I tried clamwin portable on a PC with an other antivirus installed. The other anti virus is much quicker by an order of magnitude compared to clamwin portable. So I do not think that it is a question of drive optimization.

It is not a question of tweaking clamwin to certain file extensions only. For example, I did this test: a drive with only 1 file in it. It is a pdf file, size 0.7MB. (of course pdfs may contain viruses, so I cannot filter out pdfs).

It takes clamwin 24 seconds to scan that 1 small file. Isn't that huge? That means that 30 minutes of clamwin would scan only slightly over 60 files of similar size. This cannot be true.

It's not quite like that. Clamwin takes long to load the database,. but that is only done once per scan, so if you scan a whole folder or multiple files the time it takes won't be that long.

OK, I did a new test with a drive with 5 PDF files. Each file is approx 15MB.
Total clamwin time (including loading databases, etc) was 3 minutes 10 seconds.

I measured with a stopwatch the time it took to scan the 1st PDF file. That was a whooping 56 seconds before clamwin moved to the next file!

What is the problem with Clamwin being so slow? Can anyone look into this problem ?
