How often you need to run a ClamWin scan depends upon what you do on the internet. If you surf a lot and download lots of software, you should scan often--say daily. It also depends upon what other antivirus software you are using.

ClamWin is an on-demand scanner, which means it scans when you tell/demand it--either by clicking on a file, directory, or drive or by scheduling a scan. It is not an "on-access"/real-time scanner, which automatically scans files when they are access on your computer (opened, closed, or modified). Because on-access scanners offer better protection, you should be using one, and you should use ClamWin as a backup scanner. You should not use more than one on-access scanner, but you can use ClamWin with an on-access scanner because it is not scanning in real-time. So, if you use an on-access scanner, you probably don't need to scan with ClamWin very often--say once a week or so.

If you don't have an on-access scanner yet, there are still several good free ones around. There is AntiVir from Avira, Avast from Alwil, and AVG from Grisoft. There is also a free behaviour blocker--Threatfire from PC Tools. I don't recommend anything other than these four products at the moment. There are all sorts of fake antivirus software and less-than-adequate scanners, so watch out. Stick with one of these. We hope that ClamWin will be upgraded to a real-time/on-access scanner at some point, but that's up to the developer(s).
