Clam can't detect a virus until someone submits a sample of it to the Clam Team. Once they get a sample, they can prepare a signature for it. When Clam or ClamWin users finds a virus that Clam doesn't detect, they should go to the Clam submission page which is at https://cgi.clamav.net/sendvirus.cgi on the Web and fill out the submission form and upload a copy of the file containing the virus. The Clam team will then prepare a signature for it pretty quickly. Samples submitted by Users get preference in signature preparation before those from other submitters.
Not all AV companies get their samples at the same time, so some AVs will get signatures before others. In most cases, all AV companies will have a signature for a widespread virus within a couple of days.
