I recently saw an interesting development that I thought I would share with you. It seems Trend Micro is suing Barracuda, which sells gateway appliances because Barracuda has implemented Clam Antivirus. Trend claims a patent on using antivirus for email scanning. Some Open Source organizations are recommending a boycott of Trend Micro's products.
I'm not certian, but it appears that Trend also mentions that ClamAV is produced in Europe and Australia. I don't think ClamAV has done much in Australia (other than Alch's work for them on an early GUI), so I'm wondering if they mean ClamWin. Anyway, Trend's main concerm seems to be Barracuda's use of ClamAV at the gateway, and that's what they are trying to stop.
I can't understand why Trend hasn't done this before if it really has such a patent. In other industries, things like this happen when the industry has topped out because the companies in the industry seem to get more concerned with protecting what business they have than with working harder to get new business. I know that AVG is now the number 4 AV company in size/business and is hot on Trend's tail.
This is interesting, and you can read about this at: https://www.virusbtn.com/news/2008/02_13a.xml on the Web. Barracuda also has an explanation at https://www.barracudanetworks.com/ns/legal/ on the Web.
