A lot of anti-virus engines have this, these days. When doing any type of scan, ClamWin should check for updates and install them right away, before doing any type of scan, weather is is a quick scan, a custom scan, or a full system scan.

Good idea for manual/scheduled scans, which is the only kind ClamWin can do. When/if it ever goes real-time, it might slow things down a bit too much. As long as the file is under control, however (to keep it from executing), it probably doesn't matter--Panda Free AV is set up to wait for 30 seconds while it checks the cloud.

I actually meant this for manual scans only. For real-time protection, maybe an option to update on system start-up? Hope the developers still look into suggestions like these. Seems like Alch and sherpya don't pay much attention to the forums, these days, like they use to.

Yes - I kind of get that feeling too, RRK. Andrea also isn't as active on Clam Sentinel as he used to be. I wish they would combine Clamwin/Clam Sentinel and charge a bit for them so they could set up a permanent fund to professionally maintain them--sort of what Mozilla does with FireFox. With 500,000 or so users (just a guess), a couple of dollars per user would do it.

Isn't paying for an open-source product against the GNU GPL license agreement? I thought someone told me that a one point.

Any idea why they haven't combined ClamWin and Clam Sentinel, already? Is it because they are both written in different languages?

Last time I checked was a couple of years ago, but Open Source allows an author to collect money for his product--as long as the source remains open--that's the main thing. Alch also told me one time that he thinks you can put some proprietary code in an Open Source product as long as you use it to access operating code that is located outside the Open Source product and the operating code is distributed separately. I've seen this once or twice, I believe.

As for why not combine ClamWin/Clam Sentinel, they are written in different programming languages, and the philosophy behind the code in each is quite a bit different also. That will not stop a determined/qualififed programmer, of course, but there are not many around who want to do it for free.
