and this is one of the major problems with open source software the absolute lack of reasonable support!
Nobody knows or does nothing!
Try to contact somebody and you get a "post on the forums" message back.

Why don't I just remove the software?

As you know, clamwin is free and we work on it voluntarily in our free time. We can't physically offer support via email and if you read the contact form more carefully you would find that notice there before sending a message.

All support is offered in this forum and usually you get a response within 24 hours.

Looking at your problem I suggest you check your firewall settings and allow freshclam.exe to connect. That is of course if you haven't already uninstalled it.

ClamWin updates more frequently than the average antivirus, and some of them limit the updates provided to users of their free product. ClamWin uses the updating mechanisms provided by Clam Antivirus. There is some information on the Clam website regarding various errors that can occur in the updating process. If there is an error on their end, you will be helping to improve both Clam and ClamWin if you let the Clam people know about it via the address(es) provided in the information.

Any errors I have had in updating have been due either to (1) normal/temporary out-of-snych mirror sites or (2) my own misconfiguration of ClamWin's Internet Updates preferences.

Just made a quick review of freshclam history on my machine: actually it seems that I had quite the same problem

Probably sometimes there can be difficulties in getting the updates as Clamav servers have too many contacts at the same time or are temporarily not available.

Personally I have been using Clamwin since version 0.90 and I am very satisfied of it. It simply does its job well, can be deeply customised and last but not least, it's free.

BTW, scheduled DB update has run while I was writing the post and all has been carried out smoothly.


Bones: Don't be disappointed about Clamwin so quickly, give it a longer try. I personally had some problems in the past when updating also come commercial AVs, so I think it just can happen. Of course any misfunction notification is welcome, as it can just improve the software.
