it's not possible without implementing a service (i.e. clamwin v1) and clamscan will always take all the cpu this is not avoidable except lowering the priority, I think by default you already have
low priority in settings but I'm not sure the outlook plugin honors this options (I don't use outlook)

I mean the v1 version will be made by a windows services a kernel driver and a gui, application will be able to ask the service to scan a file, this will reduce the overhead while loading db,
i.e. if you scan 100 email you will not need to load 100 times the virus db, that for sure it will considerably lag the system.
The scan process will take anyway all the cpu there are really no ways to avoid it, except than lowering process priority (the scanner will still take all cpu possible but other tasks will have priority in the
os scheduler)

I uninstalled 90.1.1 restarted my server then reinstalled it. And it still stays at 100% whenever it scans an email...granted it's not holding at 100% for 20seconds or anything but if i have emails in que it will sit and scan at 100% until the que empties. Which can take an hour depending on how much email is coming through.
This is totally unnaceptable. And seems to be a bug that ClamWin needs to address asap.

ALSO: i tried version .90.1 and it did the same thing.

I did the same that Scotty did and... same result! Sad
I've been forced to disable the emails scan but in this way there is nonsense in having it as antivirus... I hope someone will be so great to find a solution to this bug! Wink Thanks in advance...!

This is fixed in current clamav SVN and should appear in next stable version:
http://lurker.clamav.net/message/20070430.133304.f442216d.en.html

Note that I have tried current SVN: just look this summary of a scan on my maildir directory to see improvement in scanning time:

Code:

----------- SCAN SUMMARY -----------
Known viruses: 120637
Engine version: 0.90.2
Scanned directories: 65
Scanned files: 15958
Infected files: 4969
Data scanned: 387.44 MB
Time: 3152.150 sec (52 m 32 s)

----------- SCAN SUMMARY -----------
Known viruses: 120637
Engine version: devel-20070502
Scanned directories: 65
Scanned files: 15958
Infected files: 4971
Data scanned: 429.25 MB
Time: 627.529 sec (10 m 27 s)

Next version will also include new phishing code to detect phising mail without signature.

does anyone know when ver1 will be released? i've had to dissable my clamwin av because the the cpu was being held at 100% so long it was causing registry I/O errors. Which is bad. Also i see this has been reported since Jan this year. I'm surprised no one has fixed this yet. Poeple cant use the program.

There's no definite date for version 1.0, although it is supposed to be this year. As for max CPU use, could you try to break up your scans so that you are scanning for shorter periods of time? For instance, scan Program Directory at 9 am, scan Windows Directory at noon, scan Documents/Settings Directory at 3 pm, etc. I used to do this, but lately I just scan the Windows directory and let NOD 32 perform the complete scans on my standalone PC.

There are two patches to fix the problem of clamav 0.90.x engine (SVN version should be already fixed):

I have read the thread and want to "add" ~ this is a problem that was created when going to 0.90.1 to 0.90.2 (upgrade 0 & 2). I am not a 'server' but a standalone PC user. I never had a problem with ClamWin before these upgrades. And since there were 3 upgrades in a little over a month ~ something tells me there IS some program problem that was created here.

I have the exact same problem with CPU usage at 90-100% almost all the time ~ not just for 20 minutes. I use a web-based email as well as Outlook Express for my email. I worry because high CPU, to me, indicates phishing, adware, active-x controls, or other infiltration of my system. After reading the thread, I realize it must just be the CLAMSCAN but I have it set to the Lowest priority and it still uses 90-100% CPU.

Rolling Eyes Would one of the programming team please look at this? Shocked

If it isn't fixed, I fear I will need to go back to the 88.7 Ver and fortunately, I kept that download in order to do that, otherwise I wouldn't be able to get it from the proxy server - all they have is the latest version.

Thanks ClamWin TEAM ~ it is a great piece of software (shareware). Keep up your good work ! But please try and fix this problem with the latest version, PLEASE.
Thanks, ~Melanie

Note: I am using current SVN clamav on my Linux mail server, serving over 600 users, and is working fine. Would be nice if the ClamWin developers release a version with current SVN version of clamav (at least marking it as a beta or experimental until no one note any regression).

It should be fixed now in SVN:

this fixes the lag on loading virus db doesn't increase the speed Smile
perhaps they made a lot of changes in the scanner itself so it may be faster
we already have in beta a version of outlook plugin that workaround this by using directly
libclamav so the db is loaded once at the first email scanned

I am using clamwin to scan emails on hmailserver and I also have this exact same problem with it taking forever to scan emails that are only 1 line!

This is unacceptable because it means a huge backlog of undelivered email builds up in a queue waiting to be scanned before it can be delivered, with the CPU at 100% the whole time.

I have seen people mention updating the latest SVN, how exactly do I do this? Currently I am running Clamwin 0.90.2.1

Thanks

ClamWin Version 0.91 should fix this--as per above, and it is currently being tested.

We use ClamWin for our Icewarp Merak mailserver, and also suffered the same scanning slowdown with the 0.90 releases as discussed here in this thread. Mail would take so long to scan, that the mail server often cancelled the scan with an error. In the end we stopped using ClamWin for our mail.

I just tried the new 0.91.1 release, and though I didn't have the time for a thorough test yet, I'm very happy to tell you all that everything seems to be back to normal!

I don't know or understand what exactly the problem was, but at least for us the 0.91.1 release works fine and even seems to be a lot faster than the previous releases.

Thanks for the good work and for making this ClamWin user happy again! Very Happy
