There is a new virus. It is called DP Pro 15-1. They sell it at places that sell soft wear. It is advertised as a virus protection, but it really is a virus. When you install it on your computer, you can't open any secure web sites. It makes your computer run very slow. They have tech support, but you have to pay $9.00 up front before they will talk to you. You can send them an email for tech support, but it takes them 2 or 3 days to respond. You also get a pop up about once a week when you start your computer that says that you are not authorized to use DP. You have register on line. This after already having registered. you have to do this over and over and over because they can't keep track of who they have licence their product to. When you go to shut your computer off, you get a WIN523 error (or something like that. I don't recall the error number). You can't just shut down your computer, you have to wait around for the error message to pop up then shut if off every time. Then when you get sick of DP, you can't take it off. I tried to uninstall it, but it won't let me uninstall it. This thing has robbed me of countless hours, and I have lost money due to not being able to get on the web sites that I need to get on. I was tracking a stock. I was going to buy the stock, but I couldn't get onto the trading platform. It went up 14% one day and about 28% over 3 days. All the while I am waiting on tech support. I am going to sue DP - most likely in small claims court. Stay away from DP it sucks. Its as bad as a virus.

The above post really has nothing to do with ClamWin.... perhaps it should be deleted.

Sounds like you have some rogue antispyware. Visit Malware Teks at http://wiki.malwareteks.com/index.php?title=Main_Page on the Web. They have some helpful information/tools: a DIY Removal Guide, a Malware Cleaning Guide, IDDefender help (you may have a version of this), and forums. You can ask for removal help in the forums, but you will need to use the Malware Cleaning Guide first and then post of copy of a HijackThis log to help them.

After you get things cleaned up, stick with well-known security software. If you need some recommendations: for antivirus, either AVG/Avast/Antivir--for antispyware, either the free real-time Microsoft Windows Defender or the free on-demand version of SuperAntiSpyware along with Spyware Blaster (also Free) for additional browser protection. Go with either the Windows XP firewall or Comodo's free firewall.

Good Luck.

I had AVG. It didn't stop anything ( I did have a boss that was downloading virus infested porn and then sending attachments infested with the virus to everyone on the project). Clamwin was the only thing that found the virus- or so I am told. I had Norton. It made my computer run very slow. Then when it ran out, I made the mistake of upgrading to 360. That was even slower. I couldn't open any web pages, and the tech support didn't speak English. Clamwin works, isn't slow, and I don't have to worry about getting my money back.

Well, I guess you have already gotten rid of the malware then. Agree with you about Norton. It's somewhat less of a resource hog than it was a couple of years ago, but I still wouldn't use it. I am using AVG free now until ClamWin comes out with their resident version 1.0. AVG's not bad--they have improved it quite a bit, but you have to keep it updated (like any AV), and you don't get any support outside of the free forum, but the forum has a few very knowledgeable people there. The free version doesn't look for spyware, so you need to run a dedicated antispyware program alongside it. For extra security (against botnets), look into the RUBotted beta from Trend Micro. It's light, free, and hardly noticeable.

Regards,
