I think my next computer will have a Linux OS. That way I can use Clam AV, and even though it doesn't have enough signatures and practically no heuristics, it can scan in real-time and I won't really have to worry about all the Windows malware.

Ah Linux is not as safe anymore neither are macs and of course all those tablets and smart phone now need virus protection

I don't know if you could use Yara on Win 98 (probably not), but you might want to look into it. It's mostly used by IT security analysts/researchers, but you can use it yourself with some effort. It's not a complete AV system, but you can prepare your own signatures for malware from which you want to protect yourself. There are free Yara signatures available.
